Elasticised so they are taut and close to the tubes when not in use.
Adjusting buckles are cam-lock. In an emergency they can be released by pulling back on the ends of the adjusting straps.
The knees when bent pass up through the straps. To escape from the thigh straps simply straighten your legs.
The straps are effective enough with skilled paddlers to allow eskimo rolls.
